What is your existential maturity and functionality?

by

In the early days of computing, there was phrase used to indicate that no illusions were created to present information. It was “WYSIWYG” or what you see is what you get.

That concept is what underlies existential maturity and functionality. The existentially mature person is one who operates with transparency and authenticity. They are someone who has embrace their own needs, their ability to address conflict, their desire for community and their ability to act adaptively. They function by living in the truth of their experience without the need to distort reality. They live in the desire for the peace and wellbeing of all people.

Our experience working with ourselves, and others is that we can all achieve this level of functioning when we are alert to our own needs, especially needs to be regarded by ourselves and others. Wounds, especially childhood wounds, stunt our ability to feel good about our selves and are incredibly damaging.

The Dali Lama was in a conversation with a group of westerners who asked him about his opinion regarding preserving self-esteem in people. He and his translator went into a puzzled discussion which resulted, to his regret, that he could not answer the question. He did not understand how people could lack self-esteem because it was not a condition that people in Tibet experience, even though they experience many harsh realities.

The more we are empowered to deal with reality and not an interpretation of reality, the more we express our existential maturity and functionality.
